Blog anniversay and giveaway

It’s been a little over a year since I started this book-blog. A year filled with wonderful discoveries in the realm of books, and attempts at writing my thoughts on them in the form of reviews. Every trip to the bookstore was like a journey into the world of magic. It’s true that not all the books I bought were to my liking, just like it’s true that the books I did like outnumbered by far those I didn’t. Sometimes even magic has its limits.
I am grateful to everyone who has visited this corner of the virtual world and especially to those who have taken a few minutes of their time to leave a comment. Your input was (and continues to be) greatly appreciated.

The books to be given away are
The Gargoyle – Andrew Davidson and
Little Bee – Chris Cleave (also published under the name “The Other Hand”). I read them last year and loved them both. I hope you will, too.

To enter the giveaway you must:

1. Write a comment here saying which book you’d like to receive
2. Leave a valid email address in your comment
3. Write the name and author of your favorite book and a few words about it. I’m always looking for books to read and I’m always interested in what other people recommend.

You can also tell me a bit about yourself; I’m not asking for your birthday but it would be nice to know where you live, what your favorite color is and which ice-cream flavor you prefer. This may, or may not influence my decision. Don’t worry, I won’t send you ice-cream. I’m just curious about little things like that.

This giveaway runs from January 28th – February 4th , 2012 and is open internationally. The winners (one for each book) will be notified through an email and will have 48 hours to answer. I’m not sure yet how I will choose who gets the books. Maybe I’ll toss a coin or maybe I’ll have a raffle. Comments are still moderated.
Good luck!

Congratulations on your year of blogging! No need to enter me in your drawing but I will tell you that I live in California, my favorite color is purple and my favorite ice cream is pistachio.

My favourite book last year is Hisham Matar’s In the Country of Men. Matar writes beautifully and makes you cry. 🙂
Congratulations on your anniversary! hope there is many more. I live in the UK and my favourite ice cream is green tea (which I rarely find it here but loads in Asia!). Count me in for Gargoyle.

      Hi Jo,
I like books that make me cry. That’s how “The Other Hand” was. There’s a scene in that book that makes me cry every time I read it and I’ve read it a few times.
      Ah, green tea ice-cream, I shouldn’t be surprised it’s your favorite. 🙂

Congratulations on your anniversary! I’ve only just found about your blog from Goodreads, but I’ll probably be sticking for a while; I’m loving your reviews! Not that I can find books I like easily here, which is Bahrain by the way, but there’s always a chance, right? So, uhh I like violet and turquoise, and my favourite ice-cream flavour is chocolate mint… about my favourite book, hmm I guess that would be Agatha Christie’s The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, if you’re into suspense, I higly recommend it!
It was really hard to choose between the books here… but count me in for The Gargoyle!

    • Delia says:

      Thank you Maryam, and welcome.
I don’t think I’ve read any Agatha Christie books – I am definitely into suspense but I always thought she writes detective novels. I’ll keep your suggestion in mind.

I used to eat a lot of ice cream (cinnamon and coffee were my two favorite flavors), but I took a look at the ingredients list from my local ice cream parlor and found something on it called “calf gelatin”. I didn’t want to think about that, so I stopped eating ice cream. I sometimes eat sorbets now. There’s a place in Seattle that sells a delicious cucumber sorbet. It sounds weird, but it’s very tasty.

I sometimes like bright red, but sometimes I prefer deep greens and blues. There’s also a vibrant shade of blue sometimes used in colored vinyl records; I’m particularly fond of that.

No need to enter me in the contest…just keep up the good work.

    • Delia says:

Ah, if that ingredient is what I think it is, that would have stopped me, too. I’m sure not all ice-creams use that. At least I hope so because I love ice-cream.
I’ve never heard of cucumber sorbet before – I’m intrigued.
That shade of blue is amazing, I like it a lot.
Thanks for the encouragement. Say hi to Babo. I kinda miss him. 🙂

My names Deondra, and i’m 19. I love to read, and although I mostly read YA novels like “City of Bones, or “Nightshade”, I’ve recently read “A Song Of Ice and Fire” series by George R.R. Martin and LOVED it. It’s become of my favorite series, and I think you would really enjoy them. I also love “Lord of the Rings”, and “The Hobbit”, and “Brightly Woven”. Both of the books you are giving away, both sound very good, but “Th e Gargoyle” definitely fits my taste in books more, it has that fantasy vibe that I realy like. If I had to choose my favorite ice cream flavor I would have to say..Red Rasberry Velvet 🙂

    • Delia says:

      Hello Deondra,
Thanks for sharing your favorite books. I have seen the first season from “A Song of Ice and Fire” series and loved it! Haven’t read the books though, and I think it’s a little late now since I already know what happens. It was the same with ‘True Blood” – I am a big fan of this series and it wasn’t until I watched quite a few episodes that I found out about the books. Oh well, the movies will do just fine.

Happy Blogiversary, Delia! This is so wonderful! I have enjoyed reading your thoughts on books and your travel notes during the past year and I look forward to reading more of them this year. I would love to receive ‘The Gargoyle’. One of my alltime favourite books is ‘The Elegance of the Hedgehog’ by Muriel Barbery. It is so wonderful – I will heartily recommend it. I live in Madras, my favourite colours are green, sky blue and orange, and my favourite ice cream flavour is rum and raisin (with black currant being a close second).

    • Delia says:

      Hi Vishy,
Thank you so much for the wishes.
I have one more post to write about my Chiang Mai trip, it’s been rather difficult to choose from the many photos I took but I’ll get to it, I promise (note to self: be more organized).
I have seen the book you mentioned and I’ve heard of it here and there – I’ll look for it at the bookstore. Thanks for the recommendation.

  7. Kenisha says:

Hello and congratulations on your blog’s anniversary!
My name is Kenisha. I’m 23 and I live in Atlanta. My favorite color is purple, and my favorite ice cream was a “fruit salad” flavor that hasn’t been sold since I was in middle school. I liked it because it was green with swirls of red goopy gel.

It’s hard for me to settle on a favorite book. I’m about a third of the way through a sci-fi story called “In Her Name” (the omnibus edition) by Michael Hicks, and so far I would recommend it. I will say that I really enjoy China Mieville’s novels. “Perdido Street Station” had me glued to the pages.

I’m interested in “Little Bee.” It’s different than what I usually read, but that’s the whole point in broadening one’s tastes. 🙂

    • Delia says:

      Kenisha, thank you.
China Mieville, that name sounds familiar but I’m sure I’ve never read his books. I have to admit I’m not a big fan of science fiction but I have read a few stories now and then. More like then than now.
Here’s another one who should try and broaden her reading tastes. 🙂

  8. Jenners says:

    Happy Blogiversary!!

No need to enter me … I read The Gargoyle and have Little Bee. But I will still tell you that I live in New Jersey in the United States, my favorite color is yellow and I love mint chocolate chip ice cream!

Here’s to another year of blogging fun!

    • Delia says:

Hi Jen, thanks for coming by and for answering the questions. Yellow, huh? That’s a happy color and it suits you. Many of your posts are so funny, it’s a pleasure to visit your blog.

      Cheers to that!

  9. Aik says:

I’d love to read Little Bee by Chris Cleave. One of my favourite authors is Michelle Moran. I loved her young adult historical fiction – Cleopatra’s Daughter. The story is full of twists and turns as well as palace intrigues.

    • Delia says:

Thanks for visiting, Aik. I’ve never read anything by Michelle Moran – young adult fiction is not something I would normally choose but if it comes my way I won’t say no.

  10. Aths says:

Congratulations!! Somehow I missed your post earlier! Cheers to more wonderful years of blogging!
